Topic: What you need to know about bankruptcy in oil & gas
This presentation will cover the basic bankruptcy documents you will see, what they mean, what to do with them and the concepts behind them.
Mitchell E. Ayer is a Partner in Thompson & Knight’s Bankruptcy and Restructuring and Oil and Gas Practice Groups in the Firm’s Houston office. Mr. Ayer’s practice encompasses representing creditors, trustees, debtors, and creditor committees in various bankruptcy matters. His oil and gas litigation practice is concentrated in state and bankruptcy courts, and he has several reported cases. Mr. Ayer also counsels clients in acquisitions and dispositions of oil and gas properties as well as acquisitions and dispositions of natural resource companies. Additionally, he works extensively in oil and gas title due diligence in acquisitions of properties.
Mr. Ayer is Certified in Business Bankruptcy Law by the American Board of Certification. He is also Board Certified in Oil, Gas, and Mineral Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Mr. Ayer received his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Houston Law Center, his M.B.A from Cleveland State University, and his B.A. from Wittenberg University. He is actively involved in several professional organizations, including the American Bankruptcy Institute, Inns of Court, Houston Bar Association, and Houston Energy Finance Group. Mr. Ayer’s honors include being named to The Best Lawyers in America® by Woodward/White Inc. and Texas Super Lawyers® by Thomson Reuters. He served on the legendary Coast Guard Cutter Bibb from 1972 to 1974.
Cassandra Sepanik Shoemaker is an Associate in Thompson & Knight’s Bankruptcy and Restructuring Practice Group in the Firm’s Dallas office. Cassandra represents creditors, debtors, and equity holders in complex corporate reorganizations and bankruptcy litigation in the United States and abroad. She has represented creditors in objecting to the adequacy of disclosure statements and confirmation of Chapter 11 plans of reorganization and parties involved in preference and fraudulent transfer avoidance actions. In addition, Cassandra has experience advising on a range of bankruptcy and other insolvency-related issues, including lender liability litigation and the implications of seeking bankruptcy relief. Her engagements have ranged across a wide array of industries, including energy, real estate, telecommunications, and healthcare.
Cassandra received her J.D., summa cum laude, from South Texas College of Law and her B.B.A. in Finance, cum laude, from Texas A&M University. She previously served as a Judicial Intern for the Honorable Nancy Johnson, U.S. District Court, Southern District of Texas. Cassandra is actively involved in several professional organizations, including currently serving as Board Member and Treasurer of the International Women’s Insolvency and Restructuring Confederation.
